Richmond Plains Wines, located in Nelson, New Zealand, has become the first vineyard to be certified fully biodynamic by Demeter, as of 27 May 2009.
The first wine to be made from certified biodynamic grapes is the 2008 Aries label, made from Pinot Noir grapes. Aries has now been released for sale and is available from the cellar door and selected wine stores.
The Pinot Noir was hand-picked on 1 June 2008 as the moon moved through the constellation of Aries a fire sign — the ideal time for harvesting biodynamic fruit.
Richmond Plains plans to release its biodynamic 2009 Sauvignon Blanc in July, followed by Pinot Noir, Rose, Chardonnay and Blanc de Noir (Pinot Noir made as a white wine). Its wines are all certified organic.
