Cowra winemakers united with trophies and gold

Cowra winemakers are celebrating its best ever result at the 26th annual Cowra Wine Show which saw 2590 entries from 461 wineries.

With a history of producing great Chardonnay, it was fitting that a gold medal (top of class) and ‘The Ian Armstrong Trophy for Best Chardonnay of the Show’ was awarded to a Cowra wine, the 2006 Spring Ridge Cowra Chardonnay.

“We have been producing small batches of Chardonnay since 1997, and to get this recognition, especially within the forum of an open show such as Cowra, is fantastic,” commented owner Peter Jeffery.

Two other gold medals were awarded to Cowra wines, including the 2007 Mulyan Cowra Shiraz (top of class) and the 2007 Swinging Bridge Cowra Shiraz.

The 2007 Mulyan Shiraz also went on to win ‘The Tony Gray Award for the Best Local Wine’.

“Wine quality is increasing across the region, so we are particularly excited to win the Tony Gray Award,” commented Jenni Fagan from Mulyan. “The result reinforces our commitment to the area. Cowra wines, especially the Chardonnay and Shiraz, are certainly comparable to the best within Australia.”

Mulyan Wines had a very successful show. As well as winning the Tony Gray Award, the winery received one gold medal, two silver medals and eight bronze medals for its range of wines.

Swinging Bridge winemaker, and President of the Cowra Region Vineyard Association, Tom Ward expressed his excitement at the success of the regional wines. “We are lucky to have an open show in Cowra. It ensures that we consistently benchmark our wines against the best in Australia, and to win gold medals and trophies highlights the quality of the region.”

“The region is banding together as never before, and sharing ideas in order to put Cowra back in front of our customers. There are over 40 vineyards in the area, with over a dozen cellar doors open for tastings, including a number of organic vineyards,” concluded Tom.

The 2008 Cowra Wine Show was overseen by a respected panel of Judges including Chairman Andrew Spinaze from Tyrrell’s Wines, Lester Jesberg from Winewise Magazine, Tim Knappstein from TK Wines, Steve Goodwin from Witchmount Wines, Michael Kerrigan from Hayshed Hill and John Glaetzer from John’s Blends in South Australia.
